The real life story of Alice in Wonderland

Age Concern Southend want you to know about the real Alice in Wonderland because you may be able to help her enjoy her twilight years.

This Alice is 85 years old and has lived alone since her loving husband died five years ago. Sadly she has become immobile due to her advancing years and is now unable to get out on her own. And this is a story that is familiar right across the country.

All Alice's relatives live some distance away so visits are very occasional and that left this dear old lady increasingly lonely and depressed - until last year when Age Concern Southend came to her rescue.

They arranged for a volunteer to visit her once a week for a cup of tea and a chat and this simple lifeline has completely revolutionised Alice's quality of life. She is now much more outgoing and cheerful and it didn't take very much for her life to change.

But there are many more Alice's and Fred's in Southend, which has one of the highest numbers of old people in the country. They are all seeking the help of someone who can offer a kind word and help raise a smile.

It doesn't take up all your time being avolunteer for Alice or Fred, just an hour a week is all you need to transform someone's life.
