IT'S not only the ordinary man in the street who gets conned and defrauded – even the famous have been victims to clever confidence tricksters.
The latest victim is Katie Price, alias Jordan, who was defrauded of £14,000 after a busty impostor in a blonde wig and sunglasses stole her identity.
The model’s credit cards were declined during a shopping trip and when she complained to her bank she was told a woman claiming to be her had reported them as lost or stolen. It then emerged the fraudster had dressed as Katie’s alter ego Jordan to get at her cash.
Katie, 33, said last night: “It is just terrifying that this could have been allowed to happen.”
Pals said Katie was shopping in Brighton on Sunday when three of her credit cards were rejected when she tried to make a couple of purchases. When she went to pay by credit card, her PIN number kept getting declined and the card was eventually blocked – much to her embarrassment.
“She tried to pay with three different cards and the same happened with all three. After calling her bank and speaking directly to her branch manager, she was informed they had received a call from a woman posing as her 24 hours previously who had cancelled the cards," said a friend.
“Katie then asked what the balance of one of her accounts was and informed it was around £14,000 less than the amount she was expecting. A £9,000 withdrawal had been made, followed by two £2,500 ones, and none of them were by her.”
The source said Polly Gould, who runs Katie’s charity eBay site, investigated and realised someone had logged into the system using the model’s credit card details. It also revealed items had been ordered giving Katie’s real address for billing but with a delivery address in the north.
HSBC’s fraud department immediately contacted Lincolnshire Police and is working with detectives to track down a gang thought to be responsible.
Investigating officers have already obtained CCTV footage of a woman wearing a long, blonde wig and sunglasses, attempting to withdraw cash. The stolen £14,000 has since been credited back to her account by HSBC.
