The Historical Society of Rayleigh was formed with a vision of promoting interest in both archaeological and natural history both in Rayleigh and in the surrounding districts.
They meets on the third Wednesday of every month and provides a programme of speakers who give talks and presentations in their chosen field of interest. The meetings are held in the main hall at Holy Trinity Church, off Hockley Road, Rayleigh. They begin at 8pm.
The Society currently has in excess of 130 members and the annual subscription is £10 per person which covers entry to the monthly meetings. Visitors are welcome to come along at a cost of just £2 per session. Refreshments are available during the meeting for just 30p.

Benfleet & District Historical Society

The Society was started in 1955 and since then has enjoyed a successful series of regular monthly meetings (usually during the winter) covering historical matters both local and national.
During the summer months outings are arranged by the Outings Secretary to local historical sites and buildings. The Society partakes in the annual Rochford Hundred Lecture held, on a rotating basis, in Rochford, South Benfleet and Canvey Island.
The Society is responsible for staffing and displays at the Dutch Cottage Museum at Northwick Corner, Canvey Island. It is open to visitors on Spring and Summer Bank Holidays and Sundays from the beginning of June to the end of September from 2.30 to 5pm. Private visits can be made by arrangement through the Secretary.
